What is Pilates

Body Control PilatesTM is based on the work of Joseph Pilates who pioneered the methods in 1920's New York.  He worked with actors, dancers and athletes to build strength without adding bulk.  The aim was to balance strength with flexibility achieving a perfect harmony between the mind and the body.

Pilates is essentially a body conditioning method that targets the deep postural muscles.  It builds strength from the inside out rebalancing the body and promoting correct alignment.

Body Control Pilates is based around eight principles and all classes and Pilates programmes will promote these principles:

Relaxation
Concentration
Good Alignment
Efficient breathing
Creating a "girdle of Strength"
Flowing movement
Coordination
Stamina

Who Should Partake?

The simple answer is anybody and everybody looking to gain the benefits listed above.

Pilates is also suitable for pregnant women and those that are new to exercise or resuming after a few years away from the gym or their chosen sport.  Its slow gentle approach means the exercises can be simplified into easier routines which can be mastered before progressing.

As a consequence it can achieve longer term results!

It plays a key role in many injury rehabilitation programmes and is useful in postnatal women wish to get their body back to normal.
